If you think that sweet potatoes are delicious, you should definitely try out its leaves, which are also edible as the root crop itself! It can be blanched and used as a side dish or included in one’s soup or salad.

Its leaves help with the stabilization of one’s blood sugar, which is great for those with diabetes. But not to worry, anyone and everyone can enjoy its nutritional value, as it is full of Complex carbohydrates, Dietary fiber, beta-Carotene, Protein, Niacin, Riboflavin, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, and Iodine. The ingestion of these leaves help with the prevention of constipation and stomach stress, as well as the improvement of brain development, memory enhancement, and goiter prevention.

Scientific name: Ipomea batatas

A warm season crop extensively cultivated in the Philippines. It can be planted any time of the year and easily be propagated from stem cuttings.

Kamote or sweet potato (or yam) can be sliced, tossed in brown sugar then deep fried to make Kamote-cue, one of Filipinos favorite afternoon snacks.

Considered to have higher nutritional value than common potato.

The root or tuber of this plant is rich in complex carbohydrates, dietary fiber, beta carotene (a vitamin A equivalent nutrient), vitamin C, and vitamin B6. Pink and yellow varieties are high in carotene, the precursor of vitamin A.

The leaves which can be eaten as green vegetables is a good source of polyphenolic antioxidants. It has a high content of polyphenolics – anthocyanins and phenolic acids, with at least 15 biologically active anthocyanins with medicinal value. Polyphenols have physiologic funtions, radical scavenging activity, antimutagenic (prevents physical or chemical agents that cause some mutation in cells), anticancer, antidiabetes and antibacterial activity in vitro and vivo.

Other health benefits are as follows:

  • the tea from boiling kamote tops in water can help Dengue patients by improving the platelet counts in blood
  • considered hemostatic (stops bleeding) and spleen invigorating.
  • leaf extract contains flavonoids, an antioxidant compound.
  • promotes and regulates bowel movement
  • help in gradual return to good health after an illness or medical treatment, or the period spent recovering
