Ukraine was Putin’s red line against NATO expansion into Russia’s doorstep since 2007 at the earliest.
More recently, Mr. Putin declared another red line: the soon to be delivered F-16s to Ukraine from NATO will be viewed by Russia as ‘nuclear capable’ threats.
During, before, and even after his inauguration, Mr. Putin without any hint of ambiguity said that Russia will not hesitate to attack military bases outside of Ukraine that may provide logistical support for these jets to deliver bombs against Russian troops.
Analysts say those bases referred to by Mr. Putin maybe those NATO bases in both Romania and Poland.
Mr. Putin further stressed he will not hesitate to use tactical nuclear weapons against these bases both in and outside of Ukraine.
Tactical nuclear weapons are those that have an explosive power of 5 Kilotons or less while Theatre nuclear weapons are those above 5 Kilotons.
For context the one dropped in Hiroshima was about 15 kilotons while that in Nagasaki was said to be 25 kilotons.
China has long repeatedly declared their red line is Taiwan. The China-Taiwan issue though not exactly the same have some parallels with the Russia-Ukraine situation.
Like NATO in Romania and Poland and almost everywhere west of Russia — we have EDCA sites that really are defacto US military bases south of mainland China.
The closest to Taiwan proposed is located in the Batanes group less than 100 kilometers off the southern most tip of the Taiwanese island.
Taiwan is China’s red line and the Philippines is literally a stone’s throw away from crossing that line.
Mr. Putin was not bluffing all along, yet the US and NATO haven’t learned their lesson yet choosing instead to fund a disheveled and demoralized Ukrainian army in a war of attrition that Russia is clearly winning.
I kid you not, Mr. Xi ain’t bluffing too but I can ony imagine the amount of restraint in the exercise of reason the Chinese leader has against the emotions therefore irrational behavior of the people in Washington and in the Philippines by extension.
