Feminism is one of the strong forces the shapes our current society. It's existence was formed to bring fairness to the condition of woman to man in the society.
It will not be long until this is a major force that will affect Philippine politics. As of the moment, it only seems like a buzzword, but it is not a matter of "if", but "when". Will you be ready to tackle this ideology?
THE GOOD
Historically, most societies would be called "patriarchal". Man is seen as the head of the household. Woman, though seen as an equal other half of the man in the household, or sometimes even the authority of the household, they will not have the same authority in the greater society.
This dynamic has produced a society, mostly built and shaped by men. Almost every source of knowledge, laws, culture, religion and history was processed in minds of men. There is definitely a reason to suspect that men rigged everything to their favor. Or did they?
Well, we have records of laws, literarure and history in general the illustrates women: being property, ;being subhuman compared to a man, having less rights and priviledges, like not having the right to own property or being able to vote;and subjected to some forms of abuse. This will definitely invoke some emotions in the present. There is no doubt that there is injustice.
Then this man from India, Arunachalam Muruganantham, figured out a solution. A game changing idea that changed the life of millions and billions of women around the world with one simple invention. The sanitary pad. It turns out, women were culturally held back mostly due to their physical nature, menstruation. They were generally discouraged from working in a lot of industries and in many positions in society due to this.
This has empowered the feminists of the past to allow women to the workforce, and moving forward to today, women would gain most rights that man have. Unfortunately, when laws and culture are in place, it is extremely difficult to reshape them. We definitely have a lot more work to do with this regard.
THE BAD
Since the invention of sanitary pads, and different technologies that allows women to be able to enter in the workforce, culture, and politics has been changing with it. It is easy to celebrate it as a success when you close your eyes to the undesirable consequences that got from it. Let check it out
Household income, when men were expected to be the sole producer, the average expected income per family hovers around their usual expenses. So it should make sense that if women enters the workforce, it would double the income. Therefore every family would have been wealthy. Is that what we got?
An average filipino family still hover around earning around enough. Sometimes even below their expenses. Both the man and the woman, usually, cannot even imagine being able to provide a shelter by themself.
Due to this, not just the man, also, woman are now obligated to work. It is not just a choice anymore. Keep in mind, caring for children is still a duty that exists, and to be desired. Caring for children is often neglected. On a dual income household, raising kids becomes a tricky business. On a single income, it becomes desperate.
People may even just dismiss the idea of having children altogether, for the sake of having a comfortable life. Slowly, building a family has turned into a luxury.
I know, this is not what we asked for. But this is where we are at.
THE UGLY
Sooner or later, a political candidate will come in, claiming to be "the champion of feminism".
And it will be your task to decide weather you accept it or not. Yup, the spirit of Democracy.
For sure, we all agree that there is injustice against woman. We want that to change (except the few dispicable minds who thinks otherwise). We want everyone to have the same opportunity to pursue happiness. You can provide your contribution to shape society to how you envision it.
But do not forget, when culture and laws are in place, they almost impossible to take back. And when it takes effect, it will be for the all of us. We have to think wisely. We are still dealing with the mistakes of the past. Are we ready to deal with more?
In essence, Eve will again and again have to decide to take and eat the fruit, or not.
