psalms

The Book of Psalms ( SAH(L)MZ or SAW(L)MZ; Hebrew: תְּהִלִּים, Tehillim, lit. "praises"), also known as the Psalms, or the Psalter, is the first book of the Ketuvim ("Writings"), the third section of the Tanakh, and a book of the Old Testament. The title is derived from the Greek translation, ψαλμοί (psalmoi), meaning "instrumental music" and, by extension, "the words accompanying the music". The book is an anthology of individual Hebrew religious hymns, with 150 in the Jewish and Western Christian tradition and more in the Eastern Christian churches. Many are linked to the name of David, but modern mainstream scholarship rejects his authorship, instead attributing the composition of the psalms to various authors writing between the 9th and 5th centuries BC. In the Quran, the Arabic word ‘Zabur’ is used for the Psalms of David in the Hebrew Bible.

    Psalms 69:3

Psalms 69:3 (KJV) I am weary of my crying: my throat is dried: mine eyes fail while I wait for my God. We live in an imperfect world, and it is inevitable that bad times will come our way. No one can escape tears and heartache during this earthly life. As Christians, we have hope! Our...

    Psalms 56:3

Psalms 56:3 (KJV) What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. Surrendering our fear to the Lord is easier said than done. We often feel as though we are strong enough to overcome this emotion on our own, leading to us feeling overwhelmed and defeated. David prays for protection from his...

    Psalms 118:9

Psalms 118:9 (KJV) It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes. We look to people in power for all manner of needs. Military defense, justice, economic management, and more. And even the best earthly leaders fail on some of these endeavors. Some failures arise from...

    Psalms 34:15

Psalms 34:15 (KJV) The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry. In this world, it is easy to feel overlooked, especially when we are faced with opposition. Too often, it seems that greed and power prevail, and we are left forgotten. But we can be assured...

    Psalms 33:11

Psalms 33:11 (KJV) The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations. We often think we can figure everything out by our own reasoning. We look to our own innovations to improve our lives. And though our philosophies change with each generation, our world...

    Psalms 16:11

Psalms 16:11 (KJV) Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. As people, we are all trying to find the path to something. Perhaps it is happiness or success that we seek. Or maybe peace or comfort. In Jesus, the...

    Psalms 122:8

Psalms 122:8 (KJV) For my brethren and companions' sakes, I will now say, Peace be within thee. Sometimes it’s too easy to let our own needs and wants consume our prayer time. But we as Christians are an interconnected global community, and God calls us to intercede for each other. Let us...

    Psalms 145:18

Psalms 145:18 (KJV) The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth. When we call on God in truth, He promises to be near. But what does it mean to call on Him in truth? We come to God seeking Him as He is, not as we simply want Him to be. God has revealed...

    Psalms 111:4

Psalms 111:4 (KJV) He hath made his wonderful works to be remembered: the LORD is gracious and full of compassion. Have you ever seen a display of natural beauty that is so awe-inspiring, that your memory of that place remains vivid and alive? Or perhaps you remember a time when God showed His...

    Psalms 51:17

Psalms 51:17 (KJV) The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. No matter how much we give, and how freely we share, if we do so with pride and self-interest, we have neglected to offer the greatest gift. A contrite heart, the psalmist...

    Psalms 3:8

Psalms 3:8 (KJV) Salvation belongeth unto the LORD: thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah. Salvation from temporal troubles and physical blessings in this life are truly often given to us by God. But far greater than these are spiritual and eternal salvation and the accompanying spiritual...

    103:11

Psalms 103:11 (KJV) For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. How high are the heavens? We measure the distance of stars in light-years, distances far too great for us to travel. Our sin places righteousness out of our reach, at an impossibly...

    Psalms 48:10

Psalms 48:10 (KJV) According to thy name, O God, so is thy praise unto the ends of the earth: thy right hand is full of righteousness. It is inspiring to see the power of God displayed throughout creation. The mountains, the stars, the storms, all declare His glory. And it is comforting to see...

    Psalms 142:7

Psalms 142:7 (KJV) Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise thy name: the righteous shall compass me about; for thou shalt deal bountifully with me. Sin takes many forms. Pride, greed, lust, envy, and more. But all sin leads to bondage. All sin imprisons us. And even as Christians, our...

    Psalms 139:4

Psalms 139:4 (KJV) For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether. Does it ever seem like your social media and online shopping portals always know what advertisements to place in front of you? It’s like they know exactly what you want or need. God knows us...

    Psalms 121:8

Psalms 121:8 (KJV) The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore. God has assured us time and time again that He will be with us. God's protection for us is so deep that, even when we die on this earth, we are not lost to the power of...

    Psalms 141:9

Psalms 141:9 (KJV) Keep me from the snares which they have laid for me, and the gins of the workers of iniquity. Just as hunters use snares to catch animals and armies set traps to misdirect or eliminate their enemies, our spiritual adversaries deploy the same tactics against us. As...

    Psalms 29:2

Psalms 29:2 (KJV) Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness. Who can compare to the One who created the heavens, the earth, and everything in between? Who can say they can stand on the same ground as the God who made the ultimate sacrifice of...

    Psalms 100:3

Psalms 100:3 (KJV) Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. It is important to have an attitude of gratitude and an eagerness to praise God because of the times He has always shown and proven his...

    Psalms 37:5

Psalms 37:5 (KJV) Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. We all have plans and agendas. For some of us, it’s a packed schedule of activities. For others, our long-range dreams and aspirations occupy our thoughts. And when we take our plans before God...

    Psalms 51:7

Psalms 51:7 (KJV) Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Sometimes it’s hard to confess our sins. We hope that if we ignore them long enough, they will go away on their own. But sin doesn’t fade, and we can’t remove it ourselves. So God calls us...
