The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) said the process to recover a stolen SIM card if the user has registered the SIM, is now easier, according to Ivan Mayrina’s “24 Oras” report on Thursday.

Public warned vs. scammers offering aid in SIM sign-up

“Pumunta po sa pinakamalapit na telco at sabihin po na nanakaw ‘yung inyong SIM card. Magdala lang po kayo ng valid ID at ng affidavit of loss,” DICT undersecretary Anna Mae Yu Lamentillo said.

The main objective of the SIM registration is to enhance the accountability and responsibility of the SIM card users.

The mobile number of users can also be easily traced to avoid scams and crimes.

However, authorities warned of fake websites for registering the SIM cards, which only target to obtain the personal information of the users.

Some individuals also allegedly offer pre-registered or registered SIM cards.

“Ipinagbabawal ito sa batas. Hindi lang yun multa kundi may kasama po yang kulong. Hindi lang yung nagnakaw ng stolen SIM card ang may kasalanan pati yung bumibili,” Lamentillo said.

There are also several offering services for a fee to help those who are having difficulty in registering their SIM.

The DICT and telcos said that the SIM registration is free. They added the public can ask for assistance from the offices of the telcos in the sign up process.

“Kung makalusot man kayo dito sa ating initial phase of registration, meron pa tayong post verification process. At labag sa batas na i-register nyo at gumamit kayo ng ibang ID. Yung iba, may balak magbigay ng fake ID. 'Yan po ay ipinagbabawal ng batas. Di po pwede i-register ang SIM card sa ibang tao,” Lamentillo said.

SIM card user Jessie Felizardo said he immediately asked to recover his mobile number, which he used for almost a decade, after his phone got stolen last March 2021.

The process of recovering his phone number took two weeks.

“Sa trabaho po kasi andun yung communication namin nandun, yung process nga po kinailangan affidavit of loss naka indicate yung unit ng cellphone, serial number same din po yung SIM card. Aside from notarized na affidavit of loss kailangan din mag-present ng nagke-claim na siya ang may ari ng number,” Felizardo said.

He said he immediately registered his SIM card after the incident.

According to DICT, at least 21 million SIMs have already been registered since December 27, 2022. —Richa Noriega/LDF, GMA Integrated News
