In setting-up your own freshwater aquarium, there is a proper way to ensure successful establishment of the aquatic ecosystem you wanted to create. If this is your first time and has no idea how to properly establish an aquarium, you came to the right thread mate. I have here a step-by-step guide for you to follow. This is based from the knowledge I acquired back then from the internet and books which I have applied in my own experiences.
Step 1: Decide for the size of your tank
Step 2: Procure the necessary equipments and accessories(eg. airpump) to support the ecosystem that you are going to make.
Step 3: Choose the right fauna(eg. fish) for the size of your tank.
Step 4: Decide if you wanted to add Flora(eg. plants) for a planted setup or just wanted to use hardscapes and decorations or just wanted a bare-bottom tank.
Step 5: If you have decided for the above, you may now start cycling your tank. Put dechlorinated water or stock water in the tank.
Step 6: Place the hardscapes and decorations if you decided to have them in your tank. Also put now your equipments and accessories in the tank.
Step 7: Don't add your fauna yet, run your equipments(eg. powerhead) to cycle your tank and encourage the development of microorganisms essential for your aquatic ecosystem. Let it run and cycle for a few days or you can use some additives(bacteria cultures or used filtration medias from other tanks to skip the cycle process.
Step 8: After your tank has properly cycled, you may now be able to purchase your preferred faunas and put them in your cycled tank. Acclimate them first by putting the plastic in which they are packed before allowing them to swim freely in your tank.
Step 9: Congratulations! You now have established your own freshwater aquarium.
Step 10: Maintain your tank by regular cleaning, and water changes. This will ensure that your tank will not end up in failure.
I hoped this simple guide will give you ideasand knowledge to properly setup a freshwater aquarium.
