Sporting several key upgrades over its predecessor, the all-new Civic Si gets a revised exterior, a revised turbocharged engine, and a sportier-looking interior.
Let's start with the hardware upgrades. Under the hood, the 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-four cranks out 200 PS and 260 Nm of torque. While the output remains relatively close to what the outgoing model makes, Honda engineers found a way to give the new Civic Si a broader power delivery.
Peak torque is now available as early 1800 rpm (300 rpm less than before) and can be used until 5000 rpm. Meanwhile, top-end performance was also improved as engineers were able to maintain peak power output at 6000 rpm and its 6500 rpm redline.
Don't expect to find a CVT paired to the all-new Civic Si. Per tradition, the souped-up sedan comes with a proper six-speed manual gearbox. The six-speed has been updated with an improved shift feel and 10% shorter throws to give drivers a more exhilarating driving experience.
Engineers also put a single-mass flywheel that is 26% lighter than the dual-mass unit used in the previous generation. According to Honda, the results are faster throttle response and improved drivability.
Besides modifying the powertrain, Honda also improved the Civic Si's handling. Compared to the standard Civic, this comes with stiffer springs (8% at the front and 54% at the back) and thicker stabilizer bars for the front and back. It also has a 60% stiffer steering system torsion bar that Honda says improves steering feel and response. Rounding up the chassis upgrades are larger disc brakes (12.3-inches at the front, 11.1-inches at the back) and grippy 235/40/R18 tires.
When it comes to its design, Honda gave it a slightly more aggressive look thanks to several updates. It adopts a new front bumper and a reshaped rear bumper that reveals two large oval exhaust tips. The Civic Si also comes with a front lip and a gloss black rear spoiler that adds extra downforce to improve high-speed stability. Other significant changes include 18-inch ten-spoke alloy wheels and a new Si-exclusive Blazing Orange Pearl exterior paint.
Open the doors, and the 2022 Civic Si greets its occupants with 'body stabilizing' sports seats with built-in headrests. The seats are finished in red and black which highlight the car's sportier leanings. Similar to the regular Civic, it gets a 7-inch digital instrument display and 9-inch touchscreen infotainment with Android Auto/Apple Carplay as standard.
Despite the 2022 Civic Si not being available outside the US market, you have to hand it to Honda for continuing to build models specifically for enthusiasts. There is also the Civic Type R, but that's a completely different animal compared to the Civic Si.
Hopefully, Honda makes a modern version of the SiR for the Philippine market, and the new Civic Si could be it. It even has the color down already.
