Poetry (derived from the Greek poiesis, "making"), also called verse, is a form of literature that uses aesthetic and often rhythmic qualities of language − such as phonaesthetics, sound symbolism, and metre − to evoke meanings in addition to, or in place of, a prosaic ostensible meaning. A poem is a literary composition, written by a poet, using this principle.
Poetry has a long and varied history, evolving differentially across the globe. It dates back at least to prehistoric times with hunting poetry in Africa and to panegyric and elegiac court poetry of the empires of the Nile, Niger, and Volta River valleys. Some of the earliest written poetry in Africa occurs among the Pyramid Texts written during the 25th century BCE. The earliest surviving Western Asian epic poetry, the Epic of Gilgamesh, was written in Sumerian.
Early poems in the Eurasian continent evolved from folk songs such as the Chinese Shijing, as well as religious hymns (the Sanskrit Rigveda, the Zoroastrian Gathas, the Hurrian songs, and the Hebrew Psalms); or from a need to retell oral epics, as with the Egyptian Story of Sinuhe, the Indian epic poetry, and the Homeric epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey. Ancient Greek attempts to define poetry, such as Aristotle's Poetics, focused on the uses of speech in rhetoric, drama, song, and comedy. Later attempts concentrated on features such as repetition, verse form, and rhyme, and emphasized the aesthetics which distinguish poetry from more objectively-informative prosaic writing.
Poetry uses forms and conventions to suggest differential interpretations of words, or to evoke emotive responses. Devices such as assonance, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and rhythm may convey musical or incantatory effects. The use of ambiguity, symbolism, irony, and other stylistic elements of poetic diction often leaves a poem open to multiple interpretations. Similarly, figures of speech such as metaphor, simile, and metonymy establish a resonance between otherwise disparate images—a layering of meanings, forming connections previously not perceived. Kindred forms of resonance may exist, between individual verses, in their patterns of rhyme or rhythm.
Some poetry types are unique to particular cultures and genres and respond to characteristics of the language in which the poet writes. Readers accustomed to identifying poetry with Dante, Goethe, Mickiewicz, or Rumi may think of it as written in lines based on rhyme and regular meter. There are, however, traditions, such as Biblical poetry, that use other means to create rhythm and euphony. Much modern poetry reflects a critique of poetic tradition, testing the principle of euphony itself or altogether forgoing rhyme or set rhythm.
In an increasingly globalized world, poets often adapt forms, styles, and techniques from diverse cultures and languages. Poets have contributed to the evolution of the linguistic, expressive, and utilitarian qualities of their languages.
A Western cultural tradition (extending at least from Homer to Rilke) associates the production of poetry with inspiration – often by a Muse (either classical or contemporary).
In many poems, the lyrics are spoken by a character, who is called the speaker. This concept differentiates the speaker (character) from the poet (author), which is usually an important distinction: for example, if the poem runs I killed a man in Reno, it is the speaker who is the murderer, not the poet himself.
War and Peace
Man invents war. Man discovers peace.
He invents war from without.
He discovers peace from within.
War man throws. Peace man sows.
The smile of war is the flood of human blood.
The smile of peace is the love, below, above.
Peace is the whole truth that wishes to enrapture...
The Peace Of Wild Things
When despair grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do...
The Lake Isle Of Innisfree
I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made:
Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honeybee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.
And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow...
In Salutation To The Eternal Peace
Men say the world is full of fear and hate,
And all life’s ripening harvest-fields await
The restless sickle of relentless fate.
But I, sweet Soul, rejoice that I was born,
When from the climbing terraces of corn
I watch the golden orioles of Thy morn.
What...
Now bury with the dead years conflicts dead
And with fresh days let all begin anew.
Why longer amid shrivelled leaf-drifts tread,
When buds are swelling, flower-sheaths peeping through?
Seen through the vista of the vanished years,
How trivial seem the struggle and the crown,
How vain past...
Come a little closer
Honey, come a little closer,
let me whisper in your ear.
Let me tell it to you softly,
So that no one else will hear.
What I have to say is private,
and is just between us two;
just want you, to know how much,
I love the things you do

You fill the room with sweet sensation
distracting bits of information
crowd the space where logic dwells
distorting sights and sounds and smells
touching me with tactile pleasure
pushing me beyond a measure
of reasonable doubt that soon I sense
I'm nowhere in the present tense.

When I say I love you, please believe it's true.
When I say forever, know I'll never leave you.
When I say goodbye, promise me you won't cry,
Because the day I'll be saying that will be the day I die.

Love is when that special someone kisses you.
Love is having someone to talk to.
Love is being romantic on that one day.
Love is happiness that is shown day after day
THAT'S WHAT LOVE IS!

It's the way you say I love you and the way you hold my hand
There's just so much about you I completely understand
It's the twinkle in your eye that I only see when you look at me
It's the warmness of your hands it sends a shock straight to my feet
It's how you always amaze me, you surprise...
You move me like a warm summer day when the sky is bright blue and the birds are loudly chirping.
You move me like a soft kiss on my cheek when I've been crying all day.
You move me like a big hug when I'm angry or a soft "I love you" when I am sad.
You move me like the smell of chocolate...
I know when I say I love you I mean it,
I haven't felt this way about anyone before,
yes we have some distance between us:/
but baby I do love you,
and only you!
when I hear your voice I smile:)
when you tell me you love me my heart sinks:)
when we talk about moving in together it makes it all...
It was love from the start,
you came and stole my heart.
When I first looked at you, and you looked at me,
I blushed and smiled with glee.
I felt so loved by you
You gave me everything that I asked you to.
We were in love, all our friends watched in envy,
When we were together I felt so free...
my heart beats fast at just one glance
it makes me love this amazing romance
I just have to hear your voice and I fall to my knees
there are many words of how how much you mean to me
I see you face and I can't help but smile
to see you I would run for miles and miles
my love is true
but only to...
The day you told me how you feel,
I felt as if it was meant to be,
Because I liked you too.
As each day passes,
my feelings for you grew.
It is clear to see,
How my heart races with time
when you're with me.
Then I realized,
love is beautiful.
Always looking forward,
To spend our days...
Love how you always understand
I love it when you hold my hand
I love it when you make me smile
And how you never make me cry.
I love how we can talk for hours
And how the smallest kiss has so much
Power.
I love the silly things you say
I love that you always brighten my day
I love the...
The moon shines bright, on this warm winter night we laugh as we join hands, as we look up to see the stars dance,
trapped in this moment forever, knowing we will always be together, then we see a shooting star race across the sky,
creating a look of love in your beautiful hazel eyes, then I...
Save me,
Don't break me,
I love you,
You hate me,
Big deal,
You'll thank me,
There's no way to help me,
But if you just tried, then maybe, just maybe, you could save

It's hard to trust someone who always lied.
It's hard to love someone who made you cry.
It's hard to care when you want to die.
It's hard to believe when you have no pride.
It's hard to forgive when you already tried.
It's hard to be happy, when there's tears in my eyes

Richard Cory
Whenever Richard Cory went down town,
We people on the pavement looked at him:
He was a gentleman from sole to crown,
Clean favored, and imperially slim.
And he was always quietly arrayed,
And he was always human when he talked;
But still he fluttered pulses when he said...
Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
BY ROBERT FROST
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near

The Road Not Taken
BY ROBERT FROST
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim...
Mending Wall
BY ROBERT FROST
Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it,
And s***** the upper boulders in the sun;
And makes gaps even two can pass abreast.

Love not me for comely grace,
For my pleasing eye or face;
Nor for any outward part,
No, nor for my constant heart:
For those may fail or turn to ill,
So thou and I shall sever.
Keep therefore a true woman's eye,
And love me still, but know not why;
So hast thou the same reason still

And seemed the greatness of the world
in tears,
Doomed like Odysseus and the
