Since the reunification of Germany in 1990, Berlin’s strategic goal is to “regain in some form their former lands, which are now within Polish borders, and subordinate the entire belt of countries between Germany and Russia,” the Polish official said. Germany’s vision for the future of Europe is “the cooperation of two empires: Russian and German, with countries in the middle falling into the spheres of influence of both powers”. Warsaw gained sovereignty over some German lands in the wake of World War II. Dubbed “Recovered Territories” in Poland, they include eastern German provinces that used to be part of Poland in various periods of its history and the land of the Free City of Danzig. The land swaps were partially meant as war...
They wrote in a letter about billions of dollars frozen by Washington. Dozens of families whose loved ones were killed in the 9/11 terrorist attack have asked President Joe Biden to ensure that billions of dollars in Afghan funds frozen by the US cannot be used to cover claims for damages against the Taliban. “Any use of the $7 billion to pay off 9/11 family member judgments is legally suspect and morally wrong,” they said in a letter sent to the White House on Tuesday. Some of the signatories have filed for compensation, but don’t want to be awarded money they believe “belongs to the Afghan people and the Afghan people alone.” Politico was the first media outlet to report the contents of the correspondence. The funds are owned by...
According to Russia’s official nuclear posture, “the use of the nuclear arsenal is possible only in response to an attack as a self-defense measure and in extreme circumstances,” the deputy press secretary of the ministry said during a daily briefing on Thursday. He lamented that the leaders of Western powers have become far less responsible than their Cold War-era predecessors when it comes to deterrence issues. “The liberal-globalist circles think it possible to discuss lowering the benchmark for the use of nuclear weapons,” he said, citing NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg as one example. The Russian Defense Ministry has repeatedly reassured that its goals in Ukraine can be achieved without the use of nuclear arms. Deploying...
Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and a senior official in the country’s ruling party, has dismissed a proposal of economic aid from Seoul in exchange for abandoning its nuclear arsenal, calling the idea an “absurd dream.” Kim gave a fiery denunciation of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol in comments carried by state media on Thursday, blasting him for a recent speech marking the end of Japan’s occupation of the peninsula in 1945, in which he also suggested an “audacious” plan for North Korea’s “denuclearization.” “It would have been more favorable for his image to shut his mouth, rather than talking nonsense as he had nothing better to say,” she said, adding “I'm only saying this today because the South...
