DICT: No extension of SIM registration

THE Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has rejected the calls for the extension of SIM card registration.

“The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) received and acknowledged the request of public telecommunication entities (PTEs) to extend the SIM registration period pursuant to Republic Act (RA) 11934, or the SIM Registration Act,” the DICT said in a statement on Wednesday, April 19, 2023.

“However, at this point, there is no extension of SIM registration. With the 26 April 2023 registration deadline drawing near, we encourage everyone to register to promote the responsible use of SIMs and provide law enforcement agencies the necessary tools to cràck down on perpetrators who use SIMs for their crimes, consistent with the declared policy of the law,” it added.

The agency also reminded the public that non-registration of SIM (subscriber identity module) will result in its deactivation, which means that they will no longer be able to receive or send calls and text messages and access mobile applications and digital wallets.

It also reiterated the safeguards of the measure to ensure the confidentiality and security of the user.

Earlier, Smart and Globe, the country’s major telecom players, urged the government to extend the SIM registration deadline, noting that less than half of the users have registered their SIMs.

They cited the lack of government IDs required to register SIMs, challenged digital literacy, particularly of the marginalized sector, and the location of subscribers in geographically isolated areas as reasons for the slow registration.

The DICT said that as of April 10, only 39 percent of the total mobile subscribers in the country have registered their SIM cards.

Reacting to the DICT’s statement, PLDT and Smart corporate communications group head Cathy Yang said: “Patuloy pa rin po naming hinihimok ang government partners natin na payagan po nila ang ating hinihiling na extension.”

(We are still urging our government partners to allow the extension we are requesting.)

The DICT has given subscribers 120 days from Dec. 27, 2022 to register their SIMs even if the implementing rules of RA 11934 indicate 180 days as the registration period for existing subscribers.

sabi lang yan para mapilitan lahat bandang huli last minute mag down siguro website nila..
pwede pa ding magiging totoo iyan kasi naka stipulate naman sa republic act na after the mass deactivation of sims ay pwede pa ding ma-reactivate by registration kaya wala naman talagang mag-iiyakan
