On 10 August 1519, five ships started a journey from Seville for what was to become the first circumnavigation of the globe. Linked by fame to the name of its captain, Magellan, much of the expedition is known through the travelogue of one of the few crew members who returned to Spain, Antonio Pigafetta. A narrative and cartographic record of the journey from Patagonia to Indonesia, from the Philippines to the Cape of Good Hope, Pigafetta's The First Voyage around the World is a classic of discovery and exploration literature.
Step-by-step explanation
Since the starting of the 16th century, the navigation route whose founder and designer was Magellan and his sailors during the First Circumnavigation contributed a lot to the Philippines history. It geographically linked different cultures and civilizations. It also provided exchanges and achievements in commerce by seeking to trade with different countries. It provided scientific knowledge and cultural, artistic and religious practices. Pigafetta's work was important because it provides reliable information about the voyage itself. However, it also includes the early Western description of the people and language of the Philippines (Pigafetta, 2007). The exploration of Ferdinand Magellan was significant in that his voyage provided an evidence that the circumference of the earth was longer than how it had been estimated by Columbus. The Columbian Exchange was the transatlantic flow of plants, animals, and germs which began on the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the New World. Magellan and his sailors were the first persons to move around the world and as a result, they could map out the entire world and navigate it.
