NCR workers granted P40 wage hike
WORKERS in the National Capital Region (NCR) will be given a P40 wage increase, according to an order by the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board, a copy of which was released on Thursday.
Wage Order NCR-24, issued on Tuesday, said the P40 raise will bring the minimum wage in the NCR from P570 to P610 for non-agricultural workers and from P533 to P573 for agriculture workers, as well as service and retail establishments that employ less than 15 workers, and also for manufacturing establishments that employ less than 10 workers.
A statement from the Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) confirmed that this order was submitted to the National Wages and Productivity Commission on Tuesday, which affirmed the wage order on Wednesday. It will be authorized for publication on Friday. The wage order will be effective on July 16.
According to the DoLE, the new rates translate to a 7 percent increase from the daily minimum wage rates in the region and it remains above the regional poverty threshold of P452 per day for a family of five.
This order was released after a public hearing with labor groups that filed petitions seeking an increase in minimum wage because of the rising prices of basic goods.
Employers Confederation of the Philippines Director General Jose Roland Moya confirmed the news in a Facebook post on Thursday, as he was one of the representatives of the employers sector who approved the increase.
Moya confirmed that the P40 was the highest increase in the NCR throughout its existence.
"It was not an easy decision for the wage board to set the rate of increase," he wrote. "Everyone, especially the minimum wage earners, suffers from the impact of the high inflation. Not all businesses can also afford any wage increase. It will also have repercussions on the large informal sector which comprises more than 60 percent of the economy."
Last year's wage hike for minimum wage earners, which was effective June 4, 2022, was at P33. It saw non-agricultural workers earn P537 from P570 and agricultural and service workers earn P533 from P500.
