Ill start a thread for people who may like to learn other board games that are still very active but less popular nowadays. I hope a few could learn and keep the hobby on their list.

Assuming you already know how to play chess and wants to play against a variety of AI opponents or even what them play against themselves, make game analysis, make engine tournaments, prepare and test positons or opening books, etc... you can do it immediately by getting a starter package. My friend Adam made a site to understand a bit about this.

For beginners, it's a little hard to understand the basics on how to use it till you learn how these engines work and the many menus of the GUI. I'd dig up an old abandoned thread from a friend which could help understand how to use it. The Arena site has not much to provide - sorry for that! It's for more advanced users. So here it is.

Get a feel of the GUI and feel free to ask whenever you encounter problems or want to learn more about it or other related sofwares. Remember, you can only use Winboard (WB) and UCI engines to run them in Arena.
