Ill start a thread for people who may like to learn other board games that are still very active but less popular nowadays. I hope a few could learn and keep the hobby on their list.

Assuming you already know how to play chess and wants to play against a variety of AI opponents or even what them play against themselves, make game analysis, make engine tournaments, prepare and test positons or opening books, etc... you can do it immediately by getting a starter package. My friend Adam made a site to understand a bit about this.

Please spend time browsing his site for additional inputs.
For your first GUI pack, best is grab the "Arena 3.5 pack" from here:

For beginners, it's a little hard to understand the basics on how to use it till you learn how these engines work and the many menus of the GUI. I'd dig up an old abandoned thread from a friend which could help understand how to use it. The Arena site has not much to provide - sorry for that! It's for more advanced users. So here it is.

If you want to add more engines, you can go to the following sites and browse on the author's links:

and the old original release site (now abandoned by Leo Dijksman)

Now, to add your engines just follow the steps from the Rybka site - much easier.

Get a feel of the GUI and feel free to ask whenever you encounter problems or want to learn more about it or other related sofwares. Remember, you can only use Winboard (WB) and UCI engines to run them in Arena.

BTW, to know the latest ranks of the engines, please visit:

For those fond of any variants of the checkers game (including the Philippine Dama which is rare) I'll just give the last saved archive of the Internet Wayback Machine. I'm not sure if all were saved at the time they provided all their commercial softwares for Free (after they closed their site), but feel free to browse the WBM to get them. These checkers game are all world rated. Though 8x8 English checkers is solved already, some variants with flying kings like our own Dama are not yet solved. Just get Winphil 3D on the list - buhay pa yung link!

Warning: These checkers/draughts software from Alemanni may only run on older OS (WinXP and below) - sorry guys.
Pero for 10x10 international draughts, updated ang mga ito:

Update ko lang as simple as possible itong approach natin for the computer chess starter package: Arena GUI
1. You have a preconfigured and installed chess engine pack with options to add more.
2. To fully customize the GUI, go to the "User Files, Engines" link: You do not have permission to view the full content of this post. Log in or register now.
You can add and update the items in their respective folders: engine.ini, opening books, endgame database, move announcements, flags, etc.
I'll try to make a procedure later on how to run a complete chess engine tournament to check who's the best!

UPDATE ko lang yung Brazilian Checkers used by our "Philippine Dama" to make it much easier to some hobbyist. This checkers or draughts variant follows International Rules so review the links below for clarification.

The 8 x 8 board and pieces should look like this:
1607605645899.png

Check the zip-file below and browse the "Brazilian" html to get the links for the game softwares. Some are free while some are commercial. Some have strong AI engines which you can adjust to your liking. Some have opening books and endgame databases, some doesn't. Some can use other engines in their GUI if you want them to play against each other for study.....
Magtanong na lang kayo in case you encounter problems. (Ex. Aurora Borealis is good because it has modern GUI while Kallisto only uses a basic GUI but with better AI engine. Nandyan din sa zip file yung links ng iba pang checkers variants for PC(Linux, Mac, Windows...), mobile devices, utilities/tools, etc.!)
Kaya complete package po yan to look for the softwares you need. And a lot of them are free with option to use large opening books and endgame databases.. You just need to read more to learn how to use draughts in many ways.

Since 8 x 8 English checkers is solved, other 64-squares variants are almost solved too. So the best option is to switch to International Checkers ( 10 x 10 board) which is the most popular checkers version nowadays.
