The Philippines are back on alert for another tropical cyclone following deadly cyclones Vinta and Urduja over the past two weeks.

More than 200 people have been killed by the cyclones, with more than 200 others still missing, according to the You do not have permission to view the full content of this post. Log in or register now.

More than 100,000 people remained displaced as of Monday, and that number is likely to remain high as a new tropical threat emerges in the Philippine Sea this week.

A broad area of unsettled weather between Guam and Palau is expected to become better organized late this week and become the next tropical system to threaten the Philippines.

Upon becoming a tropical cyclone, it would be given the name Wilma by the Philippine government. The name Bolaven would be used by locations outside of the Philippines.

Development is possible as early as Friday near Palau, and a general westward track will take the potential cyclone toward the southern Philippines.

The threat for heavy rainfall capable of producing flooding and mudslides will return to southern Visayas and Mindanao as early as Sunday, with more significant impacts expected on Monday and Tuesday.

These areas have already endured widespread flooding and damaging mudslides that have caused travel chaos and damaged more than 10,000 homes.

New rainfall amounts of 100-200 mm (4-8 inches) are possible, with local amounts exceeding 300 mm (12 inches).

Flooding and mudslides will be a concern regardless of the storm’s strength due to heavy rainfall from the previous tropical cyclones this month.

Damaging winds will be dependent on how quickly the potential cyclone organizes later this week and will likely be confined to areas near the track of the storm.
The potential cyclone will continue westward into the South China Sea during the middle of next week with potential impacts to Indochina late next week.

While the storm leaves the southern Philippines, conditions may worsen in the northern Philippines as tropical moisture interacts with a frontal boundary, bringing the threat for heavy rainfall to northern Visayas and Luzon.
