GEMINI/MERCURY - THE RATIONAL MIND. LOGIC.
In Astrology, our mental processes and communication in writing and words are related to the 3 Air Signs.
AIR SIGNS SUN SIGN LESSONS (Training the mind. Communication)
(May 21-June 20) Gemini - Rational thinking and practical experiment. Communication.
(Sept. 23 - October 22) Libra - Partnerships. Harmony in relationships. Diplomacy. Decision Making.
(Jan. 20 - February 18) Aquarius - Independence. Individuation. Invention. Independent Thinking.
We can safely say that Gemini and its ruling planet Mercury are the most logical as applied to general thinking processes. Gemini/Mercury rules the hands, and is more concerned with PRACTICAL application of Thinking. It deals with objects and things. They are concerned with our own personal experiences. We can see how the process of speaking and writing convert images to strings of separate words, which are then "re-assembled" in the mind of the receiver.
Libra is more specific in being solely concerned with relationships between things and people. We could say that Libra (The Scales) is the most RATIONAL Sign. "Rational" comes from the word "Ratio" which compares one thing with another - such as in Mathematics.
Aquarius is specifically concerned with inventing new ways and things.
SAGITTARIUS/JUPITER - THE ABSTRACT MIND. THEORIES.
Sagittarius/Jupiter are concerned with Abstract Knowledge - that is, knowledge such as gained in the classroom or from books. At this level we have no direct, practical, experience of our own. We can see from this simple example above that this allows for a lot of confusion. Theories may not be practical.
Science (the province of Gemini/Mercury) uses experimentation to test Theories to see if they actually work in practice.
We must first consider what "intellectual" means. You will see from the definitions below that even recognised authorities cannot exactly agree on things. It is this that prompted me to spend 40 years studying and comparing seeming different subjects with one another. They were really describing the same "things" in different languages. I was able to reconcile differences when authorities on a single subject disagreed with one another.
In fact, it seems that Astrology gives us a better answer to your question. "Intellectual" seems to be more a blanket term for any form of Thinking - or symbolic mental process. It is better to use "Abstract Thinking" and "Logical Thinking" - especially when interpreting a Birth Chart.
Gemini/Mercury and Sagittarius/Jupiter are Complementary Signs/Planets and are on opposite sides of the Zodiac. We could say that TOGETHER they define "Intellectual".
