In practice, use these to determine the best setting for you:
* If you are in a congested area where you see at least three or more Wireless Acess Points (WAPs), typically identified by their SSIDs, then it is STRONGLY recommended to USE ONLY 20 MHz to avoid having problems for you and your neighbors.
This is the most stable operating mode under any conditions.
* If you are in an area where there are fewer than three WAPs, then you can enjoy the added throughput by using 40 MHz. This is only ideal in an environment where you are the only WAP operating in the area.
