to be successful, it is important to have a “will to win” and when life throws unexpected things at you, you should be able to bounce back with your spirit.

let's look at some idioms and phrases that you can use while talking about winning and losing.

1. win out

meaning: to achieve success after great effort
example: world cup 2011 was not a cake walk for india. the final six from dhoni won out the match.

2. will to win

meaning: a strong desire to succeed.
example: i am sure he will knock out everyone. you haven't noticed his will to win.

3. win back

meaning: to get something back which was achieved before.
example: the shopkeeper never trusted his friend's intentions after the last burglary. he struggled a lot to win back the lost trust.

4. win through

meaning: to achieve success after facing many difficulties
example: you should always win through your actions, never with your arguments.

5. win by a nose

meaning: to win by small difference.
example: i. he lost the bet only because i won by a nose.
ii. the new jockey was very competitive. I just won by a nose.
