Trivia There's a Very Familiar Logo on This Chinese Fighter Aircraft

The last time we checked, Cebu Pacific is not in the business of producing fighter aircraft for the Chinese air force. And yet, a logo very similar to the company's iconic emblem is seen on the trainer versions of China's Hongdu L-15, a fighter aircraft introduced in 2010. Apart from China, the only other country that uses the Hongdu L15 is Zambia. The African country purchased six Hongdu L-15s in 2014 for $100 million.

The photo in question was taken in November 2010 and uploaded on airliners.net, the largest online open-source database of aircraft photos. The fighter aircraft in the photo is actually one of several trainer versions of the aircraft made for the Chinese air force.

The next photo is from the plane manufacturer itself, Hongdu Aviation Industry Group. You can see a bronze stencil of the logo under the cockpit.

Based on the photos, it appears the logos began appearing when the Hongdu JL-10 was introduced in 2010. It is not clear why the logos were used.

History of the Logo​

Cebu Pacific, the Philippines' leading budget airline, began using the logo when it launched to the skies in 1996. The airline chose an eagle for its emblem to represent flight.

On its 20th anniversary, the company changed its logo to a simpler, lighter image but largely retained the eagle representing the company. Below is a comparison of the logos from 1000 Logos.

According to 1000 Logos, the new emblem looks lighter, more dynamic, and refined. The colors of the eagle also represent the colors of the Philippines.

History of the Hongdu Fighter​

According to Military Today, the Hongdu JL-10 (L-15) Falcon took to the skies in 2006. It was developed by China's Hongdu Aviation Industry Group and Russia's Yakovlev Yakovlev Design Bureau, an aircraft manufacturer.

The aircraft was originally labeled "L-15," but when it was adopted in 2013 by the Chinese air force, they named it JL-10, the successor to its JL-9.

It is considered a multi-role fighter and has impressed generals in China's military. Today, it serves as the next-generation training aircraft for China's People's Liberation Army Air Force and People's Liberation Army Naval Air Force.
