The Suffering is a video game created by Surreal Software and Midway Games for PlayStation 2 , Xbox and PC in 2004 . The sequel The suffering: the ties that unite us came out in 2005.
The player controls Torque, a man who has been sent to the Abbott State Penitentiary in Carnate Island, Maryland . Torque has been convicted and sentenced to death for murdering his ex-wife and two children, even though he claims to have fainted at the time this happened and can not remember anything. The night that Torque arrives there is a strong earthquake that frees an army of monsters in the installation. Torque’s cell breaks and frees him from his captivity. From his cell, Torque goes through the prison in an attempt to escape from the live Carnate Island.
During the tour, Torque discovers that the unleashed monsters personify the many forms of execution that the island has received. In addition, he encounters the spirits of some of Carnate’s most famous residents: the deranged psychologist Dr. Killjoy, the former hangman of Hermes T. Haight, and the repentant assassin Horace. With his help, Torque discovers that he can transform into an angry monster himself (other characters claim that these “transformations” are nothing more than a kind of adrenaline- filled madness).). Killjoy is obsessed with healing Torque, although his methods are questionable, and at various points offers vague medical advice. Horace and Hermes, on the contrary, try to influence him to take him to good or evil, respectively. Torque meets other characters throughout the game, whose destiny is decided by the player himself.
