Car enthusiasts look away. The Bureau of Customs (BOC) crushed another batch of vehicles at the port of Manila and Cebu as a warning to smugglers. This time, ten cars met their end courtesy of a backhoe.

The condemned vehicles comprised of both new and used models. These included classic cars, used luxury vehicles, and SUVs. Interestingly, the BOC did not disclose the total worth of the vehicles destroyed this time around. However, the figure could easily be in the 8-digit mark.

Possibly the most expensive vehicles crushed in the bunch would be the classic air-cooled Porsche 911, closely followed by the Alfa Romeo 2000 GTV and Mercedes-Benz W109. Other vehicles condemned to a backhoe were a Bentley Continental GT, a Toyota Land Cruiser (LC76), Ford F-150 Raptor, Range Rovers, and two luxury vans. No luxury cars or supercars such as Lamborghinis, McLarens, or Ferraris were included.

The crushing of the vehicles was led by Commissioner Rey Leonardo B. Guerrero. It also coincided with the BOC's 119th founding anniversary. Secretary of Finance Carlos Dominguez III was also present to watch the destruction, and commended the BOC for “performing extremely well in 2020 by continuing to raise better-than-expected revenues, ensuring the free flow of goods, and redoubling its campaign against smuggling”.

Once again, there were mixed reactions towards the BOC's move to destroy the smuggled vehicles. Some said that the trio of classic vehicles could have been part of a museum. Others said these three vehicles alone could have easily raised millions at auction. The funds earned would then used to purchase much-needed vaccines for fellow countrymen. Still, some insist that the show of force will deter smugglers in the future.

What do you think of the BOC crushing these vehicles? Should they have auctioned them off and used the money to buy vaccines, or is crushing them justified?

Ibenta/I-auction na lang sana yung mga sasakyan para may maraming budget pambili ng bakuna ang bansa.
Anong opinyon niyo sa pagsira ng BOC sa mga sasakyan?
