Filipino workers in Taiwan handed over to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) the salary increase of NT $ 3,000 or the equivalent of nearly P7,000 in addition to the monthly salary of Filipino workers abroad.
However, Ople clarified that the salary adjustment only applies to newly hired, transferred and rehired workers, according to guidelines published by the Taiwanese Ministry of Labor.
"This means that the pay increase will not take effect for those with an existing contract," Ople explained.
The new adjusted salary of NT $ 20,000 compared to the previous NT $ 17,000 is exclusive to caretakers and domestic workers.
There are a total of 25,867 Filipino domestic workers and caregivers in Taiwan, out of 147,940 OFW working there.
At an exchange rate of 1.85, the wage increase represents an increase in the peso currency from the current monthly wage P30.260 to P37,000.
“I hope that foreign household workers with existing contracts can also be granted a wage increase given their excellent and reliable service,” said Ople.
