Sara, Bongbong top presidential survey

Updated: 1:00 am Sept. 30, 2021

DAVAO City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio again led the list of probable presidential bets for the 2022 national elections, the September 2021 Ulat ng Bayan National Survey by Pulse Asia Research Inc. revealed.

If elections were held today, 20 percent of Filipinos would support Duterte-Carpio. However, this was 8 points lower than the Pulse Asia survey results in June, where she also took the lead.

"If the May 2022 elections took place during the survey period, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte would score a plurality win with the backing of 20 percent of the country's ãdül† population," Pulse Asia said in a statement.

The mayor had announced that she will not run for president and will seek reelection instead.

Trailing the mayor was former senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., who got a rating of 15 percent. He was followed by Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso at 13 percent and Sen. Emmanuel "Manny" Pacquaio, 12 percent.

Last week, Domagoso and Pacquiao were proclaimed as the presidential bets of their respective parties.

Marcos has yet to make an announcement if he will join the presidential race. He was endorsed by the Kilusang Bagong Lipunan, a political party founded by his father and the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas.

"Almost half of Mindanawons (47 percent) express support for Davao City Mayor Duterte while little over a quarter of Metro Manilans (28 percent) back former Senator Marcos. In the rest of Luzon, the lead is shared by the latter (20 percent) and Manila Mayor Domagoso (16 percent)," Pulse Asia said.

Sen. Mary Grace Poe, who took the fourth spot in June, slid to the fifth spot at 9 percent, while Vice President Maria Leonor "Leni" Robredo remained in the sixth spot despite garnering 2 additional percentage points among survey respondents.

On the other hand, Senate President Vicente "Tito" Sotto 3rd topped the vice presidential survey at 25 percent.

Sotto is the running mate of Sen. Panfilo "Ping" Lacson.

President Duterte's popularity as vice presidential candidate in 2022 decreased by 4 percent to 14 percent.

Tied at third spot were Domagoso and Marcos at 12 percent each, followed by Pacquaio and Sen. Christopher Lawrence "Bong" Go at 7 percent each.

Go declined the nomination of the PDP-Laban to be its standard bearer.

"Senate President Sotto is the top choice for vice president in Metro Manila (30 percent) and the rest of Luzon (29 percent), and the Visayas (27 percent), while President Duterte is the leading candidate in Mindanao," Pulse Asia said.

A total of 2,400 respondents aged 18 years and above were surveyed by Pulse Asia from Sept. 6 to 11, 2021, using face-to-face interviews.

The results of the survey have a ±2 percent error margin at the 95 percent confidence level for national percentages, while subnational percentages have a ±4 error margin, also at 95 percent confidence level.

'Duterte candidate to beat'

Malacañang on Wednesday said that Duterte is "the candidate to beat."

Palace spokesman Harry Roque Jr. said that surveys are "snapshots of public opinion at a particular period of time."

"The latest Pulse Asia survey, conducted September 6 to 11, was done when aspirants, including President Rodrigo Duterte who expressed interest to run for the vice Presidency position, have yet to file their Certificates of Candidacy, and there are uncertainties on PRRD's electoral bid," Roque said.

"Be that as it may, the President remains the candidate to beat in the 2022 elections," the Palace official added.

Meanwhile, PDP-Laban Secretary General Melvin Matibag said the Pulse Asia survey, together with the many other surveys conducted and to be conducted in the future, "will serve as our guideposts for our strategy once the campaign period starts."

He said the ruling party "will continue on highlighting President Duterte's success in the campaign against drugs, criminality, corruption and terrorism."

"We will also direct the attention of the Filipino voters to the transformation of travel and mobility in the last five years, even with the pandemic, not just in Metro Manila but also in remote provinces," he said.

The filing of certificates of candidacy will be from October 1 to 8.
