PLDT’s new cable system strengthens its fixed and mobile services with the coming completion of the Jupiter Submarine Telecommunications cable system, with construction expected to finish by December this year. PLDT had previously invested Php 7 billion in 2017 on this Trans-Pacific cable system which connects three landing points: namely Japan, the Philippines, and the United States.

“PLDT continues to work with major Asian carriers and OTT (over-the-top) players for the implementation of the new Jupiter cable system to support the expected new fixed and mobile services requirements,” PLDT said in its annual report released on Tuesday.

Once the new cable system has been set up, the telco should see an increase in international data capacity. This should help improve our existing internet connectivity to match that of our neighboring countries. Just last year, subscribers of various telcos felt the effect of relying on one major submarine cable system. With the addition of PLDT’s new cable system, subscribers are afforded better internet resiliency from the telco should any one of their cable systems need repair or experience downtime.

The new Jupiter system spans 14,000 kilometers from Daet, Camarines Norte, the Philippine landing station. Unlike satellite internet systems, PLDT’s new cable system is a lot like the Asian American Gateway Submarine cable that makes use of fiber optic submarine cables which are capable of delivering an initial capacity of more than 60 terabytes per second from the Philippines to Japan and the United States directly.
