PABLO S. ANTONIO
National Artist for Architecture (March 25, 1976)
(January 25, 1901 – June 14, 1975)

Antonio was born in Binondo, Manila. He was orphaned by the age of 12 and had to work to support his highschool education. He first studied architecture at the Mapua Institute of Technology but later transferred to University of London after Ramon Arevalo, the engineer in charge in Legislative Building, funded his education. In 1927, Antonio graduated after studying for only 3 years(The normal is 5 years).

Pablo S. Antonio pioneered modern Philippine architecture. His architecture adapts the Art Deco techniques. His works are known for its simplicity and clean structural design. The lines are clean and smooth, and where there are curves, these are made integral to the structure because he believes that function should come first before elegance. During his lifetime Antonio's most notable belief is that "buildings should be planned with austerity in mind and its stability forever as the aim of true architecture, that buildings must be progressive, simple in design but dignified, true to a purpose without resorting to an applied set of aesthetics and should eternally recreate truth".

Antonio S. Pablo was officially declared as a National Artist For Architecture on March 25, 1976 by the President Ferdinand E. Marcos. Antonio’s major works include the following: Far Eastern University Administration and Science buildings; Manila Polo Club; Ideal Theater; Lyric Theater; Galaxy Theater; Capitan Luis Gonzaga Building; Boulevard-Alhambra (now Bel-Air) apartments; Ramon Roces Publications Building (now Guzman Institute of Electronics).
