The world’s erstwhile leader among mobile phone brands, Nokia, is officially coming back with smartphones and tablets running on Android!

A new company called HMD Global Oy will create a full range of Nokia branded products while Nokia sets the mandatory requirements in terms of design, quality and performance. This will happen when since Nokia’s contract with Microsoft expires on the second half of this year.

Nokia warns though that it will take some time before Nokia devices hit the store shelves. HMD will control the sales, marketing and distribution of Nokia devices but it still has much to do to adhere with Nokia’ standards.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is selling the feature phone business that it acquired from Nokia to a subsidiary of Foxconn. The Chinese company known for manufacturing Apple products will then manufacture the new Nokia devices for HMD.

“We will be completely focused on creating a unified range of Nokia-branded mobile phones and tablets, which we know will resonate with consumers,” HMD’s future CEO Arto Nummela said.

Hopefully, the consumers will be the ultimate winner with these developments. We’ve been waiting for Nokia’s comeback for years.
