According to three main theories, the Philippines arrived:

1. Theologians' concept throughout the Spanish period,
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, theologians and ecclesiastical historians believed the Philippines to be a part of God's creation. They said that the islands were part of a continent where man and animals might live indefinitely after Noah's floods.

2. Myths and legends
Filipino mythology tells the story of the Philippines' origins. One of these urban legends goes like this: There was no land a long time ago. Only the sky, the sea, and a soaring bird were visible. The water raged, hurling massive waves towards the heavens. The earliest lands, including the Philippines, sprang from these rocks.

According to legend, the Philippines were created from pieces of a massive ball of solid granite carried on the shoulders of a giant. He got weary one day and let his heavy load slip down his shoulders, crashing to the ground. The lands, including the Philippines, emerged from the broken pieces.

3. Theories of science.
There are three points of view, ranging from the fantastical to the generally accepted:

a) A piece of a long-forgotten continent
The Philippines were the last remnants of a huge Pacific continent that sank during ancient times. "Lemuria" or "Mu" was the name given to this long-lost Pacific continent. Borneo, Celebes, Java, Sumatra, and other Pacific islands were among the survivors, in addition to the Philippines.

b) It has a volcanic origin
Scientists think the Philippines are volcanic in nature, and that they were created by ancient sea volcano eruptions. The idea revolves around the formation of islands above the oceans and how they were linked via an underwater tunnel.

c) The hypothesis of the land bridge
The Philippines was originally a part of Asia's mainland, according to most experts. The Sunda Shelf, which spanned an area of 1,800,000 sq km, was exposed dryland that formed the present-day China Sea. Lower land areas, including land bridges between Asia and the Philippines, were flooded during the post-glacial period, approximately 250,000 years ago.
