Leandro V. Locsin
National Artist for Architecture (May 23, 1990)
(August 15, 1928 – November 15, 1994)
Locsin was born on August 15, 1928 in Silay City, Negros Occidental. He completed his elementary education De La Salle College in Manila, finished secondary education in La Salle and took Pre-Law but then shifted to pursue a Bachelor's Degree in Music at the University of Santo Tomas. Locsin was a talented pianist but he later shifted to architecture one year before graduating. He married Cecilia Yulo and they are blessed with two children, one of which is also an architect.
Leandro V. Locsin was conferred as a National Artist For Architecture on May 23, 1990 signed by President Corazon C. Aquino. Locsin’s works were grand and ambitious. Most of his projects are characterized by brutalist design. He is known for his use of concrete, floating volume and simplistic design in his various projects. From 1955 to 1994, Locsin has produced 75 residences and 88 buildings, including 11 churches and chapels, 23 public buildings, 48 commercial buildings, six major hotels, and an airport terminal building.
Locsin’s largest work is the Istana Nurul Iman, the palace of the Sultan of Brunei, which has a floor area of 2.2 million square feet.
