Significant portions of the internet went down following an apparent failure of the infrastructure that supports many of the world's largest websites.

Numerous popular websites, including Reddit, Twitch, Spotify, Stack Overflow, GitHub, gov.uk, Hulu, HBO Max, Quora, PayPal, Vimeo, and Shopify, are currently down.

The technical issues also hit big news websites such as The Guardian, The New York Times, CNN, BBC, and Financial Times.

According to Downdetector, an online platform that provides users with real-time information about the status of various websites and services, the problems appeared to be caused by an issue with Fastly, a cloud computing company that provides critical services to a large number of websites.

Other websites remained operational but were unable to function correctly. Twitter, for example, loaded – but not any emoji used in posts.

On Fastly's "You do not have permission to view the full content of this post. Log in or register now." page, on June 8, 09:58 UTC, it stated that "We're currently investigating potential impact to performance with our CDN services." On June 8, 10:26 UTC, it was updated and revealed a message, "We are continuing to investigate this issue." The problem was finally identified on June 8, 10:44 UTC, stating, "The issue has been identified and a fix is being implemented."

A content delivery network (CDN) is a geographically distributed collection of servers that collaborate to deliver Internet content quickly. CDNs serve as proxy servers, caching some data as close as possible to the end-user. For example, media content is frequently cached at a CDN server close to you so that it is not required to be fetched on the original server each time a user loads a web page.

CDNs have evolved over the years to include additional security features such as load balancing, DDoS protection, web application firewalls, and others. Fastly, Cloudflare, CloudFront on Amazon Web Services, and Akamai are all popular CDNs.
