Japan’s Naoya Inoue, a fighter in his prime, needed less than two rounds and a few solid blows to stop Filipino Nonito Donaire Jr. in brutal fashion at Saitama’s Super Arena last night.

Inoue, who at 29 is 10 years younger, sent Donaire down with a short right in the closing seconds of the opening round, and then again for good in the 1:24 mark of the second.

Inoue hit Donaire with powerful, accurate shots near the corner, a right and then a left to the head, to put the Filipino down for the last time. Referee Michael Griffin quickly signaled the end of the fight.

Donaire, a four-division champion and future Hall of Famer trying to stretch his good years inside the ring, was clearly no match for the Japanese who had earlier vowed to send the former into retirement.

Inoue simply lived up to expectations in the rematch of Ring Magazine’s Fight of the Year in 2019.

“I needed to win this fight. I did it. I want to be the undisputed champion. Maybe I can do that in 2022,” said Inoue through an interpreter.

With three belts in the 118-pound division now in his hands, Inoue can look forward to fighting WBO champion Paul Butler of England.

With Donaire down on the floor, the Japanese turned his back and raised his right hand in victory, far better and more convincing than the one he scored against Donaire in the same arena in 2019.

In the end, Inoue, nicknamed the “Monster,” had his WBA and IBF bantamweight belts, and the WBC belt, which Donaire carried into the ring, hanging from his shoulders.

It was a massacre that ended quicker than most fight fans had hoped for. Inoue’s ring entrance, amid blaring rock music, must have lasted longer than the fight itself.

Donaire wore a cut under his right eye and took defeat like a man. He bowed before the crowd, then left the ring, perhaps for the last time.

Inoue improved his record to 23-0 with 20 knockouts while Donaire, who lost his legs after the first knockdown, dropped to 42-7.

It was only the second time in his career that Donaire was knocked out, the first one in the hands of Nicolas Walters in a featherweight clash in Carson, California in 2014.

Whether Donaire will keep on fighting is for him to decide.

cancel japan! loljk
