you are a horse running alone
and he tries to tame you
compares you to an impossible highway
to a burning house
says you are blinding him
that he could never leave you
forget you
want anything but you
you dizzy him, you are unbearable
every woman before or after you
is doused in your name
you fill his mouth
his teeth ache with memory of taste
his body just a long shadow seeking yours
but you are always too intense
frightening in the way you want him
unashamed and sacrificial
he tells you that no man can live up to the one who
lives in your head
and you tried to change didn't you?
closed your mouth more
tried to be softer
prettier
less volatile, less awake
but even when sleeping you could feel
him traveling away from you in his dreams
so what did you want to do love
split his head open?
you can't make homes out of human beings
someone should have already told you that
and if he wants to leave
then let him leave
you are terrifying
and strange and beautiful
something not everyone knows how to love.


I've stumbles upon this poem on YøùTùbé some years ago.
I think the video has already been taken down, but listening to Warsan was just so... I can't put it into words really.
But to me, it is something unforgettable.

it's about women whom other people deem as someone who is 'difficult' to love because they're so intense when it comes to love.
So intense that their actions to some people feels too much. They could be called, too clingy, too emotional, too idealistic, someone who gives their all in the relationship that she expects the same from her partner, and that, to others, is kind of scary. But then still, other people try to be with her.

At first, their partners would say that she's the best, that the kind of loving that they experienced from her was so different from his previous relationships and they think that they would never experience the same again after her.

But then over time, her partner would realize that no one could ever really live up to the ideal partner that she has in her mind. That no matter what her partner does, it would never be enough.

And since she doesn't want to lose her partner, she tried to change herself, be the person that her partner wants her to be. But it's all too late, her partner has already seen who she is, what kind of person she could be, and that no matter she does, her partner would still eventually leave her.

The end of the poem says that she 'can't make homes out of human beings', that one's happiness and satisfaction can't rely on a person, and she should've been told that much sooner. And that if her partner wants to leave her, then let them go.

Yes indeed she's very intense when it comes to love, she may be too much, and that could be terrifying to others.
She may be difficult to love and not everyone knows how to love a person like her.
But maybe one day, she'll meet her match, one day realizes that she doesn't really need someone else to love her to be happy.
