US President Joe Biden on Saturday wished the Philippines well on the latter's Independence Day, and at the same time called for continued joint efforts amid the pandemic and regional tensions.

"To all the people of the Philippines, Happy Independence Day! It’s my honor as President to send best wishes and the enduring friendship of the American people as you celebrate this joyous occasion," Biden said in a video message from the White House shared by the US Embassy in the Philippines.

Biden said both the US and the Philippines are marking two momentous occasions this year, the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries and the 70th anniversary of the Mutual Defense Treaty.

"This year our nations are also celebrating two momentous anniversaries: our 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 70th anniversary of our strong alliance," he said.

“The Philippines and United States share so much history, and our people are forever connected to our deep bonds and shared sacrifices and valor, of family, and of friendship," Biden added.

Biden also recognized the contributions of Filipinos and Filipino-Americans to the US.

"More than four million Filipinos and Filipino-Americans call the United States home. They make invaluable contributions to communities all across our country. They enrich the American character, making our nations stronger and more vibrant," he said.

Biden then said the Philippines and the US should continue working together amid the pandemic and in ensuring the Indo-Pacific region is kept open for all.

"As we honor this joyful occasion of independence and friendship, let’s also look to the future, at the challenges our two countries must continue to work to take on together, from defeating this pandemic and strengthening global preparedness for the next one, to advancing the free and open Indo-Pacific region for all peoples," he said.

"I hope that friendship between the Philippines and the United States will continue to be a source of strength for both our nations through all the decades. I wish you all a safe and joyful celebration. Thank you and Happy Independence Day!" Biden said.
