Automatic Centre on Wednesday announced it will be closing shop next month, after more than 70 years as the COVID-19 proved to be detrimental to its business.
“We would like to announce today that Automatic Appliance Inc. (AAI) will officially close down its appliance retailing operations effective October 10, 2021,” AAI president and CEO Geoffrey Lim said in a letter.
AAI is the owner and operator of the Automatic Centre brand and stores.
It is the oldest retail appliance and electronics store in the country, established in 1948.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has caused tremendous challenges in our business and it is with much regret and trepidation that we share this news with you today,” Lim said.
Nonetheless, he assured that the company will remain committed to honoring its obligations and “that we intend to work closely with each of you to ensure a smooth transition and closing process.”
“For over 70 years, the ‘Automatic Centre’ brand has been synonymous with selling high quality appliances, electronics and gadgets at very reasonable prices and at affordable payment terms,” Lim said.
He said that the company will continue to seek out outside parties that may be interested in using or adopting the “Automatic Centre” brand name, “in line with keeping the brand’s legacy alive.”
Benito Lim established the first Automatic electrical appliances store in Avenida Rizal, Manila after the country’s liberation from Japanese occupation.
