Asteroid Apocalypse!

1. They will be working with other similar programs around the globe to find and track threatening comets and asteroids that pass close to the earth.

As each year passes, the risk, according to astronomers, increases the likelihood of a major impact that could threaten life on our planet. The 2013 Chelyabinsk fireball raised eyebrows when it exploded over Russia, damaging buildings in nearby towns and injuring about 1,500 people (mostly from broken glass). Scientists believe it would take an asteroid 31 to 61 miles in width to completely wipe out life on the earth.

This is nothing new, of course. The final destruction of our planet has been presented with a variety of scenarios—nuclear holocaust, climate change, galaxy collision—but none of these match with what the Bible says how the world will end. Yes, some Bible verses might sound a little like there will be a planetary catastrophe: “The day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up” (2 Peter 3:10).

But these doomsday predictions by scientists don’t mention the most critical factor in the final destruction of Planet Earth—the second coming of Jesus. The Scriptures unequivocally state that the grand climax of history is the return of Christ. “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come” (Matthew 24:14).

It is not a sophisticated asteroid detecting system coordinated by national defense office that will determine the timing of the end of the world. It is the Bible. The Word of God outlines the signs that tell us the nearness of Jesus’ return. His coming is what marks the end of the age, not a near-earth-object.
