Philippine telecommunications companies reported Monday an increase in demand for mobile data amid the enhanced community quarantine over the entire Luzon.

In separate statements, incumbent players Smart Communications Inc. and Globe Telecom Inc. said they are now taking steps to ensure that the high demand for mobile data is met.

According to Pangilinan-led Smart, data traffic has since grown by around 15% to 20%.

"On the part of PLDT, this is not surprising given that we have provided a speed boost for our fiber customers in the Greater Manila area. Mobile data usage is also increasing along with voice calls and SMS," it said Monday.

Traffic that originally came from offices, Smart said, is now coming from residential areas, but its fixed and mobile networks have the capacity to handle the increased traffic.

"Having said that, we are not standing still and are taking steps to expand the capacity of our networks, particularly for data," it said.

Smart said it has already increased the capacity of its international cable networks, seen to improve the ability to carry internet traffic which comes mainly from overseas. It has also increased the capacity of its domestic transport network by utilizing its transport fiber network.

"As for reduction of the video resolution of livestreaming services, specific arrangements have to be made with the content providers which control that matter," the company said.

The same sentiment was shared by Ayala-led Globe Telecom, which noted that the increase in confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Philippines has jumpstarted the adoption of telecommuting, effectively raising the demand for mobile data and broadband connectivity.

"Given the present-day realities with enterprises deciding to adopt flexible work arrangements, employees need to be able to collaborate and be productive anywhere they may be and in real-time, for businesses to continue to operate efficiently," Peter Maquera, senior vice president for Globe Business, said in a statement.

"That is why we are doing our best to provide our clients with the tools to help them optimize the way they do business," he elaborated.

In the statement, Globe Business said it is providing free subscriptions and discounted offers for the time being.

"These initiatives are also in response to the government’s challenge for telecom companies to level up their game with the enactment of Republic Act 11165 or the Telecommuting Act last year," it said.
