'There is no negotiation when it comes to our sovereignty. ' - President Joko Widodo
Meanwhile in the Philippines:
'If we go to war...I would lose all my soldiers just as they are leaving for the war. It will be a massacre. We don’t have the capacity to fight them.' - Duterte
You are right. We have no capacity to fight them. But we seem to be forgetting the fact that asserting your sovereignty on a territory does not equate to going to war. Indonesia did so in the past few days without going to war. Even President Widodo visited Natuna Island personally. Meanwhile, our President backed out from visiting the disputed Spratlys after boasting to ride a jet ski and plant the Philippine flag during the 2016 elections
We do not need to go to war to defend our nation. Indonesia did so successfully. We are not alone as there are other countries asserting their rights over the disputed waters, not to mention allies inside and outside South East Asia. When will we realize this? When will those in power realize this? When another nation has already taken over the Philippines? Even Indonesia cited and used the Hague ruling, in which Philippines won. Meanwhile, we did not. Instead, we deemed it as 'useless' just because another nation does not recognize it.
Being friendly with other nations does not mean letting them step on us. It does not mean allowing them to treat us like dirt. It means being treated as equals. But when will we be seen as equals when those in power always bow down to the demands of foreign officials? Always afraid to speak out and defend its nation, unlike what President Widodo did?
