A few months ago, I did some performance comparisons between the top free DNS resolvers available. Just after the release of Quad9, I tried to decide which one to use based on performance: Google, OpenDNS, Quad9, etc

CloudFlare is one of the best companies to understand the performance of the Internet and recently launched its own free DNS resolver. It supports DNS over TLS and HTTPS by default.

Now do a more interesting test: Google's 8.8.8.8, Quad9's 9.9.9.9 and CloudFlare's 1.1.1.1, and OpenDNS's 208.67.222.222 compare with some other vendors.

Supplier test
These are the top 8 free DNS providers to choose to evaluate:

Google 8.8.8.8 : Private and unfiltered, most popular.
CloudFlare 1.1.1.1 : Private and unfiltered new players.
Quad 9 9.9.9.9 : New players with a high level of privacy and security.
OpenDNS 208.67.222.222 : Block mali cious domains and provide old players that block ãdül† content.
Norton DNS 199.85.126.20 : Old players who block mali cious domain names and integrate with their antivirus software.
CleanBrowsing 185.228.168.168 : Private and blocked access to ãdül† content, new players.
Yandex DNS 77.88.8.7 : Old players who block mali cious domain names are very popular in Russia.
Comodo DNS 8.26.56.26 : Old players blocking mali cious domain names.
This is a quick functional breakdown between them about privacy options:

location
Run tests from 18 locations around the world. Try to use VPS providers and some broadband locations to try to query their DNS from as many places as possible. It tells us how much they are connected, how close the data center is, and how close someone is in the field. Selected location:

North America : San Diego, Los Angeles, New York, Toronto, Montreal, Atlanta, Dallas, Fremont, San Francisco
Europe : London, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt
Asia : Tokyo, Singapore, Bangalore (India), Sydney, Brisbane (Australia)
South America : Sao Paulo
Summary of results
The test was very simple, with 70 DNS queries being performed for the entire popular domain (google, facebook, twitter, gmail, etc.) over the entire hour. Average all requests for each location to get an overall performance metric for each DNS resolver.

TLDR / Abstract
All suppliers (except Yandex) perform very well in North America and Europe. Their response times in the US, Canada, and Europe are less than 15 milliseconds. However, Asia and South America differ in their overall averages because some providers are not well connected there.
CloudFlare is the fastest DNS of all locations. Its global average is 4.98 milliseconds, which is amazing.
Google and Quad9 are close to the second and third respectively. Quad9 is faster than Google in North America and Europe, but not well in Asia/South America.
CloudFlare has a strong presence everywhere. Although Google and Quad9 have high response times in some places, CloudFlare performs well everywhere.
Yandex is only available in Russia. It doesn't use Anycast like other providers, and it's very slow everywhere.
CleanBrowsing is the fastest provider of ãdül† (****ographic) content filtering.
