We've waited months for this moment. Months after its announcement, Honda is ready to roll out the 2022 Civic. Okay, it says Prototype on it, but it's essentially a thinly-veiled version of the all-new Civic.

The Civic Prototype looks much like the patent images that leaked out a few months back. If anything, the sedan appears to gain several inches between the bumper compared to the outgoing model. Overall, the design features both evolutionary and revolutionary cues, particularly at the back.

But first, the front, and there is some resemblance to the current Civic and Accord. The long, slim headlights remind us of Honda's executive sedan, while the grille adds a bit of a sporting character to the car. The Prototype has an aggressive-looking bumper, but we're expecting the production version to have a dialed-down look. That said, it might be a preview of the RS version.

Meanwhile, the side profile is a significant departure from the tenth-generation model. The long hood emphasizes the car's growth in dimensions, and the rear end bucks the trend of automakers trying to make their sedans look like coupes. There is a subtle nod to the current Civic with that chrome kink by the third window. Also, some will argue that the rear looks tamer than the 2016 to 2020 model. Honda ditched the polarizing C-shaped tail lights for more formal-looking clusters.

Inside, it's a significantly different look from the current model. Honda opted for the floating screen look, and the dashboard is flatter compared to its predecessor. The air-conditioning vents are slimmer, and so are the climate control panels. They also redesigned the digital instrument cluster, and we expect that in future Honda models.

As for the engines, Honda didn't mention anything about it yet. However, the 1.5-liter turbo will likely continue its duties in the Civic. The 1.0-liter turbo could be for the European market. What about the tried and tested 1.8-liter? That could be the base engine for Southeast Asian markets, while the 2.0-liter soldiers on for North America.

It's not the final product yet, but the Civic Prototype gives us a good idea of what the road-going version will look like once it's in showrooms. Given how impressed we were (and still are) with the present Civic, we have high expectations for the eleventh-generation. The production model will debut by mid-2021 as a 2022 model.

Now it looks too European. Looks like an Audi or a VW Passat.
Hope they don't mess up the Type-R.
