2021 Toyota Hilux / Hilux Revo (Facelift/Engine update)

Alongside the 2020 Fortuner, Toyota has also launched the new-look 2020 Hilux as well. This updated model is more than just a cosmetic upgrade. Toyota gave the popular pick-up truck a little more power under the hood too. More on that later.

The facelifted Hilux looks much like the one seen in leaked photos from about two months ago. The front end draws some cues from the 4Runner and Tacoma. It now features a wider grill opening and more chiseled bumper edges. Air intakes have also been made slimmer, likely due to the new grill design as well. Even the shape of the headlights seems to be mildly tweaked with an edgier design.

Other changes? The inside of the headlights have been rearranged, and it's also available with Bi-LED illumination. Also new are the wheel designs from the base model, all the way to the range-topping variant. As for the rear, Toyota has ditched bulb-type tail lights for LEDs with a new light signature.

Inside, the changes are fewer. There's a redesigned instrument cluster with new fonts on the dials. Toyota also added a 230v plug-in socket as standard in select variants. Also new is the infotainment system with Apple CarPlay support, although that might be specific for the Thai market. Other than those upgrades, the rest of the cabin carries over largely unchanged.

Now, for that engine, and it's a big upgrade. Opt for the four-wheel-drive model and you get more power out of the familiar 2.8-liter turbodiesel mill. From 177 PS seen in the current model, that now rises to 204 PS, making it more powerful than most of its competitors. The only one that edges it is the Ford Everest 2.0 Bi-Turbo which makes 212 PS. However, torque matches the Ford gets a substantial bump too. It's now rated at 500 Nm, 50 Nm more than the current engine.

What about the 2.4-liter turbodiesel? That engine gets upgrades too, but not in the power department. Instead, the base engine gets tweaks for a cleaner burn and efficiency. Toyota claims that this updated 2.4-liter can get better fuel economy as well.

Now that it's debuted in Thailand, it won't be long before we see the facelifted Hilux in our showrooms. As for its exact local launch date, that's still up for debate. Should the current situation improve, this Hilux might land here even before the end of the year.
