The pick-up truck wars are heating up once more, and we. After making its world debut in Thailand last June, the 2021 Toyota Hilux has officially been launched in the Philippines. Sporting a more aggressive look, improved features, as well as new variants, the updated pick-up truck is looking to pick a fight with its contemporaries.

Beginning with its exterior, the 2021 Hilux borrows heavily from the 4Runner and Tacoma offered in the US. It gets a wider front grille, a more chiseled front bumper, a sleeker set of headlights, and updated taillights.

There are also new wheel designs available across the model lineup. The 4x2 G models roll on 17-inch alloy wheels finished in Gun Metallic Gray, while the G and Conquest models come with 18-inch alloys finished in Gloss Black. The E variants, meanwhile get 17-inch wheels finished in Silver. Other key exterior upgrades available on the Hilux include auto-leveling LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, and LED foglights.

Exclusive on the Conquest model is several standard additions. These include overfenders, a bolder front grille, a rear sports bar, a bedliner, and a Conquest sticker placed on the rear quarter panels. A tailgate assist is fitted as standard on the Conquest models for easier opening/closing of the tailgate.

The interior, on the other hand, gets more subtle tweaks. There's a restyled instrument panel with updated gauges and multi-info display, new seat patterns, and updated trim pieces/accents. But perhaps the most important upgrade present on the 2021 Hilux is the new touchscreen infotainment.

On the Conquest, it gets a huge 8-inch screen that supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, USB, and Bluetooth. Lesser variants like the G and E get a smaller 6.75-inch touchscreen but also get the same connectivity features.

Under the hood, the 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV turbo-diesel engine now makes more power and torque. Available only on the top-of-the-line 4x4 Conquest, the six-speed A/T variant makes 204 PS along with 500 Nm of torque. The six-speed M/T version also makes 204 HP but only generates 420 Nm of torque. It does, however, benefit from Intelligent Manual Transmission (i-MT).

The 4x2 Conquest, G, E, and J variants, on the other hand, are powered by a 2.4-liter 2GD-FTV turbo-diesel. It continues to produce 150 HP and 400 Nm of torque. Available transmissions for the 2.4-liter engine include a six-speed automatic and a standard six-speed manual transmission. The J models, and the other fleet models will put out 150 PS and 343 Nm of torque.

In terms of safety features, the Conquest, G, and E models all come with anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, stability control, traction control, three airbags (driver, passenger, and knee), and parking sensors. The Conquest model benefits from a reverse camera, along with additional side and curtain airbags for the driver and front passenger.
