2022 (MMXXII) is the current year, and is a common year starting on Saturday of the Gregorian calendar, the 2022nd year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 22nd year of the 3rd millennium and the 21st century, and the 3rd year of the 2020s decade.
2022 has seen the continued impact of an inflation surge as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The global rollout of COVID-19 vaccines, which began at the end of 2020, has continued, and the year has seen the lifting of COVID restrictions, and reopening of international borders.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine, the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II, has caused the displacement of 14.9 million Ukrainians (8 million internally displaced persons and 6.9 million refugees) and has led to international condemnations and sanctions, the wí†hdráwal of hundreds of companies from Russia, and the exclusion of Russia from major sporting events.
2022 also marked the deaths of prominent world leaders including Shinzo Abe, Mikhail Gorbachev, and Queen Elizabeth II, the latter of whom reigned for more than seven decades. Prominent entertainers including Sidney Poitier, Meat Loaf, Olivia Newton-John, and Jean-Luc Godard also died.
